Deutch was born in Los Angeles, California, to actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch. Her sister, Madelyn Deutch, is also an actress. Her paternal grandfather, Murray Deutch, was a music industry executive, and her maternal grandmother, Babah Hanson (Barbara Barry Thompson), was an artist and musician. Actor Robert Walden is her paternal great-uncle. Deutch was raised in her father Jewish religion, and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony. Her father is of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent, and her mother has Irish, English, Scots-Irish, Swiss-German, and distant Dutch ancestry. She started taking acting classes at the age of five. Deutch studied at Oakwood School, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and at the Young Actors Space. At L.A. County High School for the Arts, she double-majored in theater and visual arts and graduated a year early from high school after having skipped ninth grade. She is a voracious reader, studies with a political science tutor (with a current focus constitutional law) and takes art classes at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Deutch starred as Rosemarie Hathaway in Vampire Academy (2014), based on the first book of best-selling young adult six book series written by Richelle Mead. In January 2014, it was announced that she would star as lead opposite Tyson Ritter in Randall Miller Midnight Rider, a biopic of Gregg Allman. Andrea Mandell of USA Today described Before I Fall as a milestone in Deutch rising career. The scripts of Good Kids, Dirty Grandpa and Before I Fall were on the 2011 Black List. In addition to Before I Fall, Deutch had another film premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2017, Danny Strong Rebel in the Rye. The biopic of author J.D. Salinger saw Deutch as Oona O’Neill opposite Nicholas Hoult, Kevin Spacey, and Laura Dern.
Her next film, Flower, with Kathryn Hahn, Tim Heidecker and Adam Scott, and directed by Max Winkler, premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. The script for Flower, written by Alex McAulay, was named to the 2012 Black List. Aubrey Page of Collider.com described her performance as an electric lead performance and David Ehrlich of IndieWire thought the film confirms that Zoey Deutch is a genuine star in the making. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter concluded Flower is redeemed only by Zoey Deutch magnetic performance, which would be star-making if in the service of a better vehicle.
Upcoming film releases for Deutch include her mother Lea Thompson directorial debut The Year Of Spectacular Men as Sabrina, with Avan Jogia, Madelyn Deutch, Cameron Monaghan, and Nicholas Braun.
