Deutch was born in Los Angeles, California, to actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch. Her sister, Madelyn Deutch, is also an actress. Her paternal grandfather, Murray Deutch, was a music industry executive, and her maternal grandmother, Babah Hanson (Barbara Barry Thompson), was an artist and musician. Actor Robert Walden is her paternal great-uncle. Deutch was raised in her father’s Jewish religion, and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony. Her father is of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent, and her mother has Irish, English, Scots-Irish, Swiss-German, and distant Dutch ancestry. She started taking acting classes at the age of five. Deutch studied at Oakwood School, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and at the Young Actors Space. At L.A. County High School for the Arts, she double-majored in theater and visual arts and graduated a year early from high school after having skipped ninth grade.
