She is also known for her recurring role in Supernatural as the demon Ruby. She made her acting debut as Amber in Death Valley. She followed this with an appearance in the short film Unraveled. She has also played Tracy Stark in FlashForward.

Life and career
Cortese was born in San Francisco, California. She has two brothers, Johnny and Ben, and a sister, Sarah. At the age of 13, she moved to Montana, and later to Sun Valley, Idaho. She holds a BA in English and a BFA degree in drama from the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
Before making her television debut as Kris Furillo, she performed in regional theater productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Crimes of the Heart, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
In 2005, she played two roles in an episode of Stephen King’s Dead Zone. That same year, she starred as Ashley Harris in Kids in America. From 2005 to 2008, she portrayed Kris Furillo in the series Wildfire.
She also became known as Ruby in Supernatural, which she recurrently played from 2008 to 2011. Additionally, she had a small part in the film Bickford Shmeckler’s Cool Ideas.
Cortese met actor Jared Padalecki when she had a recurring role on his show Supernatural during its fourth season, replacing Katie Cassidy, who previously played the role. She went on to make a guest appearance in the sixth season as a fictionalized version of herself. He proposed to her in front of their favorite painting, “Joan of Arc” by French realist Jules Bastien-Lepage at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in October 2009. The engagement was announced in January 2010. The pair married on February 27, 2010, in Cortese’s hometown of Sun Valley, Idaho. On October 10, 2011, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together. Their son, Thomas Colton Padalecki, was born on March 19, 2012. On December 22, 2013, Cortese gave birth to their second son, Austin Shepherd Padalecki. Their daughter, Odette Elliott Padalecki, was born on March 17, 2017. The couple resides in Austin, Texas with their three children.

When she was 13 Genevieve’s parents decided to move to the ski town, Whitefish, Montana. After two years they moved to Sun Valley, Idaho which Genevieve considers home.
She loves sports and played soccer as a child. Her other interests are snowboarding, running, surfing, mountain biking and yoga.
She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in drama and a bachelor of arts in English from the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
Jared and her consider themselves huge foodies. Gen’s favourite foods are Mexican and Sushi.
Her parents named her Genevieve after her grandmother, but growing up she preffered to be called Jennifer because it was easier to pronounce. In college she started using Genevieve again.
Her favourite bands and artists are The Kooks, The Kinks, Shiny Toy Guns, Interpol, Florence and the Machine, Sparklehorse, AFI, The Gaslight Anthem, The Rolling Stones, Death Cab for Cutie, Razorlight, Jack Johnson, Pink Floyd, and Tori Amos. She especially loves Rise Against, Bad Religion, God or Julie, and the Libertines.
She dislikes driving, running errands, cleaning and when people talk on their cell phones in public.

She has two star tattoos on her wrists, which she got as a reward for graduating college. Gen also has a tattoo on her back.
Genevieve once got suspended from school when she was in the sixth grade for writing some “naughty words” on the wall.
She’d like to own a fainting goat so she could go out and scare it. Gen says about herself: “I have a really sick, twisted sense of humour.”

Her favourite colors are blue and turquoise.
When asked what super power she’d like to have her response was: “To make time stand still, just so I could enjoy things a little bit longer.”
At about age six, her grandmother introduced her to theatre where she developed a passion for it, then going on to star in a lot of local community plays.
On March 19th 2012 after a 54 hour labour, Gen and Jared welcomed their son Thomas Colton into the world.
