In 2013, after their cover for “Pretty Hurts” went viral with nearly 12 million views, Beyoncé signed them to her management Parkwood Entertainment. They were amongst the three talents she signed, others being Sophie Beem and Ingrid. They also won Disney’s Next Big Thing competition in the fifth season.
Beyoncé discovered them
When Chloe and Halle Bailey were 15 and 13 years old, respectively, Beyonce came across them on YouTube performing a stunning, self-assured cover of her ballad Pretty Hurts. In 2015, she signed them to her Parkwood Entertainment label, an arrangement including mentorship from Knowles herself. “We felt like we were dreaming,” says Halle, now 18. The Atlanta-born sisters, who perform as Chloe x Halle, appeared in one of the definitive videos from Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade, alongside inspirational women such as Zendaya, Amandla Stenberg and the Ibeyi twins, before opening the European dates of Beyoncé’s Formation tour.
Michelle Obama is a fan
They’ve performed twice for Michelle Obama, once as the opening act to her keynote speech at SXSW Music Festival, then at the White House Easter Egg Roll. They also took part in the former First Lady’s Let Girls Learn campaign, starring in the charity single This is For My Girls alongside Missy Elliot, Kelly Rowland and Janelle Monáe.
They write and produce their own material
They can act, too
Last year, the sisters joined the cast of Grown-ish, the Yara Shahidi-led Black-ish spin-off on the Freeform network, playing college track-star twins Jazz and Sky (while writing, producing and performing the show’s theme song, of course).
They’re serious about fashion – and sisterhood
Chloe and Halle were among the talented women – Grimes, Ava Phillippe and Rowan Blanchard – who modeled for the FW18 lookbook for Rodarte, the fashion label of siblings Kate and Laura Mulleavy. “Seeing them interact on set reminded me exactly of us,” says Halle, laughing. “I admire sisterhood because you can be honest with one another. I feel really grateful to have a partner, my sister, because we go through that stuff together. Behind closed doors we have our motivational talks like, ‘Yes! We can do this! We are great!’ I think a lot of the time, with young people, women in particular, you have to give yourself that pep talk before you really stand up for yourself and say something that you’ve been wanting to say forever,” she continues. “When we walk into these studios, and we’re these two little girls in this male-dominated room, it’s like, ‘Okay, so whatcha got?’ Then we play what we have and they’re mind-blown. We want people to look at us like our voices matter. Because we’re finding that in the world today, they do.”
She is of African-American descent.
